PROGRAM DESIGN
A structured program is required to move genetic testing into routine clinical practice. Partnership with a practice leader and a small component of specially-trained support staff are necessary. Existing cancer genetic counselor capabilities are often key components of a successful program. One program design will not fit every practice or institutional situation, and HIGHGATE Genetics can present several possible strategies for success. These range from practitioner-lead testing to enhanced standard genetic counselor approaches and models for follow-up and risk management.
REVIEW OF EXISITING PROGRAMS
HIGHGATE Genetics can review programs that are in place to identify structual issues or advise on workflow optimzation.
EDUCATION
The goals of our educational offerings are to enhance the genetic testing and management competency on the part of oncology pracitioners. We provide a range of education programs that use case-based leaning to cover genetic concepts, hereditary cancer syndromes, principles of genetic testing and results interpretation, and risk management for individuals and family members. Group sizes range from five to fifty or more. The education is appropriate for physicians, nurse pracititioners and physicians’ assistants, and genetic counselors. A typical sessions lasts one day from 8 AM to 5 PM.
Sessions on the use of tumor and ctDNA testing for targeted therapies are available if desired.
Following the onsite education session, site practitioners are invited to attend Friday noon (Eastern Time) virtual case discussions, in which problematic cases can be presented by the site practitioners or a teaching case is presented by HIGHGATE Genetics.
BUSINESS PLANNING
HIGHGATE Genetics realizes that the potential impact of a hereditary cancer program is often not apparent to the business, and we can help practice leaders estimate this value. This an important part of our consultation services.
SERVICE PACKAGES
The service offerings of HIGHGATE Genetics can be requested as the full three components (education, program, business) or on an selected basis.
The recommended approach is a two-hour virtual planning session with HIGHGATE Genetics and a practice physician plus business leader, followed by an on-site full day that includes a combination of genetics education for oncologists, nurse practitioners or physician assistants, and genetic counselors, as well as sessions on program and financial modeling with appropriate staff.
Other combinations and approaches, including virtual consultations, are also possible depending on the needs of the practice or program.
